Christ is risen! My pastor preached a great sermon today about the historicity of the gospel accounts, particularly of the resurrection. Some of his points were: 1. Many scholars believe that the gospels are historically sound and have demonstrated that the historical details surrounding the gospel stories are very accurate. 2. It doesn’t make sense that the body was stolen by grave robbers, because the tomb was sealed and guarded, and robbers usually took the clothes and left the body; they didn’t steal the body and leave the clothes. The guards had very strong incentive for making sure that didn’t happen, because they could have been executed for neglecting their duty. 3. It doesn’t make sense that the story was concocted by Jesus’ followers because: a. There is usually at least one person in a conspiracy who is willing to sell out the others, which apparently did not happen in this case. b. They would not have had the initial witnesses to the event be women, especially not a woman like Mary Magdalene. They would have made a prominent man like Nicodemus or Joseph of Arimathea be the one to testify to it. c. They would not have portrayed themselves as cowering in fear in the upper room. d. They would not all have been willing to die by execution for a story that they knew they were lying about. 4. The Apostle Paul was a hostile witness who went from killing Christians for their belief in the resurrection to boldly risking his life by proclaiming its truth. His history makes his later claims more believable. vanaf: http://renaissanceguy.wordpress.com/2008/03/23/ |
